
Descriptive markup is the use of special elements added to the text of a document to represent its
structure and behavior. The elements or characters are delimited using angle brackets. In
HTML, for example, start and end tags constitute descriptive markup, and tell a browser that the text
between the tags is described by the tags themselves.
